Wednesday Weigh-In

FIRST- Happy Second Birthday to my Little Guy!

Okay...now back to regularly scheduled blogging....

Weight today- 213lbs.  Yep, I am UP 3 pounds! UGH. I have no idea why, since the LasVegasHCG worked sooooo well for me last time! I am also sick though, so perhaps I am holding on to some extra water weight?

Who knows...I just want this weight gone! I can't wait until all the snow is gone and I am more eager to get outside and be active!

Anyhow, I think I am losing inches ( I hope I am) we will find out next week...so stay tuned! ;)

Amazing writers...

This post is kind of random... and yet another way for me to procrastinate on my schoolwork (aka, a paper that is due in less than three hours, which I haven't even started yet).

I enjoy blogs, a lot. I love reading what others write. BUT...there are some writers that I come across that well, just can't write. It is sad, but true. I *hope* I am not one of those bloggers who fall into that category. I personally think I am mediocre at writing, but I do my best to keep it fairly well written and grammatically correct.

I love reading blogs with amazing writers. While doing research for a company I had hoped to review for (I was turned down at this time), I came across a very well written blog. A blog that hadn't been posted in since September of last year, but one that instantly grabbed my attention. The writer's style of writing was easily read, and I could voice it in my head...if that makes sense.

So, in support of my procrastination, and curiosity,  I would love to have some more wonderful reading material! Please leave a comment with your favorite blog writer...  it can be a review writer, or a family writer, or a random writer (doesn't matter to me). I just ask that the link you leave is NOT your own and it is for a blog that you think is well written!

I can't wait to read the comments, hope you all will help me out! ;)

Earth Hour 2011!

This is something our household has done this every year for the last few years, and it is very important to us. I would love it if you would consider joining in.

What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is a global grass-roots movement encouraging individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take positive actions for the environment, and celebrating their commitment to the planet by switching off their lights for one designated hour.
Earth Hour 2011 aims to show the actions that people, businesses and governments world-wide are taking to reduce their environmental impact. Thereby establishing and encouraging others to join an interconnected global community engaged in dialogue and resource sharing that generates real solutions to environmental challenges.
The highlight of Earth Hour 2011 will see the world’s most iconic landmarks go dark for one designated hour, as hundreds of millions of people transcend race, religion, culture, society, generation and geography, switching off their lights in a global celebration of their commitment to protect the one thing that unites us all – the planet.

What do you do?
It is simple. On March 26th, at 8:30 pm (your local time), turn off your lights, sit down with your family (or friends) and enjoy the peace. My family chooses to go so far as to turn off the breaker box for the full hour, but just turning off all non-essential lights can make a big change too! It is amazing how re-connecting the experience can be... with nothing electronic to grab your attention you focus on those around you, and you're helping the Earth!

Why do it?
For fun...to be a part of something...for any reason really, but hopefully for the Earth! It is a great reminder that simple actions can make a difference! Even if you don't want to "go green" or change your lifestyle completely, simple things such as turning off non-essential lighting CAN help! The little things DO add up!

Catching this post before Earth Hour 2011? Check out how to make this neat paper lantern with your kids!

Fluffy Fridays- Thirsties Duo Diapers! CLOSED

Thirsties' mission is to make it easy and attainable for every family to choose cloth while simultaneously investing in the local economy and sustainable business practices. Thirsties launched in 2004, and all Thirsties products are USA-made! Thirsties uses the best USA-sourced components in order to reduce their carbon footprint, and they are working towards their goal of becoming carbon neutral as well!

I have had the pleasure of reviewing two of Thirsties' Duo Diapers!

I was sent a size one for Annabelle, and a size two for Nolyn.

Size one is meant to fit babies 6-18lbs, size two is 18-40lbs. The Duo Diaper is a sized diaper, it also has an adjustable rise, so you can get the trimmest fit.

The Thirsties Duo Diaper is a pocket diaper. The Duo Diaper comes with two inserts that snap to one another, microfiber terry and hemp combo. There are openings in both the front, and back, of the diaper. This makes it very easy to ensure that the insert is flat and will be comfortable for baby. The sleeve style also makes cleaning easier, you do not need to remove the inserts before washing as they will agitate out of the diaper while in the wash.

My first thoughts: Sooo pretty! I love the eye popping colors!

I have to say, I love knowing that a product has been made in the USA. I don't refuse to purchase or use products made elsewhere, but it is an awesome bonus to know something is made in the USA. If there are two products I like equally the same, I will choose the one made in the US before one that was made elsewhere.

Trying it out:

Annabelle was not a happy camper here, and not up for modeling her pretty little diaper. However, as you can see, it fits her very well! My little miss is a skinny little girl. The hook-and-loop closure really makes for a custom fit each time.

Nolyn's diaper fit very well too. I didn't catch a snapshot of him wearing his (maybe I will update at some point), but so far the Thirsties Duo Diaper is by far the best fitting for our 2 year old boy.

My husband LOVES these diapers. These are the Daddy diaper in our house. If our Thirsties Duo Diapers are clean, they are what Dad grabs every time!

We haven't used these diapers (or any cloth diaper, for that matter) overnight as of yet, but we have used them during naps and I am happy to report that we have had no leakage- of either type!  These diapers also come clean so easily! I thought for sure Annabelle stained her Duo Diaper pretty badly the other day, but to my surprise the diaper still looks as pretty as the day we got it! The micro-fleece that protects baby's bottom from wetness also resists staining!

I love that the Duo Diapers are very absorbent! The hemp-jersey (5 serged layers of it) can hold a TON of liquid. The only bad thing about this....it takes a long time for this insert to dry.

Speaking of the laundry process...I love that the Duo Diaper has laundry tabs. Once you take the diaper off, simply fold the hook-and-loop closure over onto the laundry tabs inside the wings. This not only saves the hook-and-loop, but your other laundry as well!

Overview from my point of view:

Brand: Thirsties Duo Diaper
Price:  Solid- $18.50 Print $19.50
Type: Pocket
Fluff Factor: Minimally fluffy, fairly trim diaper.
Containment: Very good!
Ease of use: A
Drying Time: Fair!

You can request a catalog here. Find out where you can purchase Thirsties here!

In order to complete the review I received free product from the company. I received no monetary compensation for this post and my opinions are entirely my own. You may or may not have the same experience as I did with this product.

Wednesday Weigh-In (On Thursday)

I realize it is now Thursday here (EST), so sorry!

Today Northern Michigan got HAMMERED with snow. It had finally all dissapeared, and then BAM wake up this morning to 8.5+ inches! I know, I know...it IS Michigan...but I was so excited for Spring!

Anyhow, I had to work today (afternoon shift) so I didn't get to post sooner.

I am back on the WONDERFUL Las Vegas HCG diet... I seriously LOVE this stuff! I am down 10lbs already, although I did gain a lot of weight back from being stupid. Yes, I am human...and I made very bad choices. *sigh* Oh well, it's in the past and now I am on to the future!

My weight this morning was 210. Not too bad, really hoping that by this time next week I can tell you I am under 200! We'll see! Make sure to check back in next week to see if I made it!

Skin MD Natural Review and Giveaway! CLOSED

I am a mom, and a CNA. Both of these roles include a LOT of handwashing, so when I was contacted by a member of Skin MD's team to review their lotion I was happy to accept!

I live in Northern Michigan... winters here are cold and very, very dry. My face, hands, elbows, and feet are severely effected by the lack of humidity in the air.

Skin MD Natural is a shielding lotion meant to not only moisturize your skin, but protect it as well.

I found that my extremely dry skin took several applications of this lotion. However, I loved the feel of Skin MD Natural. Skin MD Natural is a light, non-oily lotion that really glides on your skin. It really felt like my skin was being hydrated and I did like that.

I did find that Skin MD Natural required frequent application each day to keep my skin from appearing dry and damaged. I do think the reason for me needing more frequent application is mostly due to my job's hand washing requirements, and the lack of humidity where I live.

Overall, I think that Skin MD Natural is worth trying- if only for the amazing feel of the lotion when applied.

Skin MD Natural is a vegan friendly lotion (free of animal products and animal testing), that is made in the USA in a 100% solar facility (according to Skin MD's website). Skin MD Natural also discloses their ingredient list and tells you little big about each ingredient.

GIVEAWAY!
Skin MD Natural would like to offer one Six in the Nest US reader a full size bottle of lotion!

Boon Squirt Review!

I am delighted to share this amazing product with you today! I received the Boon Squirt in February, and I have been so eager to try it out! Annabelle hasn't really been ready for actual food until recently, however, so I had to wait a bit before I could really test Squirt.

Well, now I have and let me tell you, the Boon Squirt is ingenious!

Looks like a kinda funky spoon, huh? Well what is amazing about Squirt is that the baby food goes inside the spoon! The spoon actually dispenses the baby food! So, forget that jar, and forget the big mess trying to scrape that last bite out of the bowl.... Squirt makes feeding your little one easy-peasy!

We have used Squirt with rice cereal. I poured some dry rice cereal in the pink handle, put in formula bit by bit until it was the right consistency, and then screwed on the spoon top. Then, go to baby and feed!

Here is my one handed attempt at taking a picture while feeding Annabelle...

Annabelle isn't a huge fan of baby food yet...and she wiggles like crazy, so it is an interesting experience to feed her. However, at least with the squirt I can put the spoon in her mouth then squeeze a bit out instead of fighting to get a spoon full of food in!

Clean up of the Squirt is pretty easy, everything seems to wash out well. The spoon comes with a cap that can be placed over the spoon piece. The first time I tried to put the cap on my Squirt I had a very difficult time. My husband, however, was able to snap the cap on quickly and then showed me how to get it on more easily.

The Squirt retails for about $7.99 (very fair price!) and can be purchased here.

Not a fan of pink? Don't worry! Squirt come in all of these colors as well!

Boon also has many other AMAZING products, I highly recommend you check them out! In addition to having great products, Boon Inc also gives back. Ten percent of Boon's profits go to charities that directly help children in need!

Boon can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and Boon's very own blog!

Boot Scoot Bikes Accessory Giveaway! CLOSED

Boot Scoot Bikes is offering a giveaway for Six in the Nest readers!
What is a Boot Scoot Bike? Here is some information from Boot Scoot Bikes' website:

Why wait until your child is 4 or 5 to teach them how to ride a big kid bike? With a Boot Scoot, even a 2 year old can be a big kid and glide around the neighborhood on two wheels.

Developed for children ages 2-6, the Boot Scoot has no pedals. Instead, children use their own Boots to Scoot themselves along, learning balance as they go.

Say goodbye to the false confidence of training wheels! Say goodbye to the ache in your back from running beside your child while they scream “Don’t let go!!” With a Boot Scoot, your child will easily and independently discover the balance, agility, and confidence necessary for riding a traditional bicycle. Now you and your young child can go for a bike ride together. Instead of just sitting in a stroller on your morning jog, your child can exercise right alongside you.

GIVEAWAY!

Open to residents of the US and Canada

Fluffy Fridays- Best Bottom! CLOSED

Best Bottom diapers is a privately owned family corporation. A husband and wife team work together to ensure the highest quality products while following responsible environmental and social business practices.

Best Bottom products have all been thoroughly researched and are all PVC-free and CPSIA compliant, this helps to reduce the environmental impact of the diapers and ensures they are safe for all those adorable bottoms! Best Bottom diapers also are designed to fit from birth to potty training. This means by using Best Bottom,  not only do you reduce the landfill waste from disposable diapers, but you reduce footprint, and cost, of your cloth diapers as well (when compared to sized cloth diapers)!

Being new to the cloth diaper world, I like a cloth diaper that is simple and user friendly. BestBottom's diaper system is exactly that!

The Best Bottom one size diapering system is not a pocket diaper, not an all in one, not a fitted diaper and not a prefold system...

The Best Bottom reusable diaper consists of a waterproof shell and a snap in insert. That's it, it is that easy. From a beginner standpoint this diaper is very user friendly.

Here is the Best Bottom diaper system I received for review:

Here is the inside of the Best Bottom shell:

My first thoughts...  I loved the simplicity of the diaper system, but I thought the waterproof cover looked like it would be terribly uncomfortable next to the skin.

Trying it out...

This is Annabelle when I first tried the diaper on. If you are a seasoned cloth diaper user you may notice what I didn't do...but if you are a newbie (like me!) let me tell you.

See all those snaps on the diaper? Well, those are what make the diaper adjustable. The diaper doesn't look like it fits well at all like this, does it?  After talking to my friend (who helped convince me to try cloth) I was able to figure out how to adjust those wonderful snaps!

Hey! That looks better now doesn't it?  In order to make this (and most one size) diaper(s) smaller you take the bottom snaps and snap them to the top. There are three rows of adjust-ability on the Best Bottom shell, so depending on how big your child is you can snap up one, two, or three rows.

How did the Best Bottom hold up?

I havn't had any leaks from the Best Bottom diaper. None. Now, I haven't tried it as an overnight diaper, but it has been a trooper during the day! I can't tell you how many explosions our Best Bottom diaper has successfully contained! The leg gussets really do their job!

Since our Annabelle is still a frequent poop-er we don't get to use the Best Bottom shell through more than a couple changes. When there is an explosion, I do find that the leg gussets get a little messy, but that is what they are there for! One nice thing about the Best Bottom shell is that if you manage to not get the cloth part soiled (or if you child only wets in the diaper) all you need to do is wipe it out and replace the insert!

Now, remember how I worried the waterproof part of the shell would irritate baby's skin? I am happy to say I have seen no ill effects from the shell on miss Annabelle's skin. In fact, very little of the inside of the shell actually touches Annabelle. The only place that comes in contact with her (with the diaper in the smallest size adjustment) is the front wings of the diaper.

Best Bottom Diapers also have a Hook and Loop closure available.
Three different sizes of snap-in inserts available. Stay dry inserts pictured. Organic Cotton/ Hemp inserts are also available as are doubler inserts.

Overview from my point of view:

Brand: Best Bottom
Price:  Shell- $16.95  Inserts- $3.99 each
Type: Hybrid/AI2
Fluff Factor: Minimally fluffy, fairly trim diaper.
Containment: Very good!
Ease of use: A+
Drying Time: Good!

You can find out where you can purchase Best Bottom's diaper system here.
